Markle’s personal relationship history includes a previous marriage to actor and producer Trevor Engelson. The couple met in 2004, married in 2011 and divorced in August 2013. As might’ve been expected, the British Tabloid press saw Markle’s American citizenship, her mixed race background and her status as a divorcee as fodder for low-brow attacks.

Markle is a reoccurring target of the British tabloid press, the reporting of which has occasionally veered into the realm of racist, sexist smear campaigns against Markle. The tenor of the tabloid attacks turned hateful in 2016, with a series of articles that attacked Markle with a campaign of racist, sexist and verifiably-false material:

– On Nov. 2, 2016, the Daily Mail ran the following headline: “Harry’s Girl is (almost) Straight Out of Compton”.
