1970s

Moving into uncharted territory with stronger female leads, a greater range of situations, and a broader range of ethnicities on screen, the ’70s was not only a cornucopia of new fashion, but also new role models. The TV shows began showing more real life scenarios and the clothing on screen was often more casual than it had been in decades past. But, there were plenty of style icons, too.

Who could forget the bubbly Chrissy Snow from Three’s Company? Her carefree style made her an incredibly popular character and was extremely youthful.

Jaclyn Smith

All of the actresses on Charlie’s Angels had great style, but Jaclyn Smith’s character Kelly Garrett had a slightly more sophisticated look, like at any moment she might go off to a soirĂ©e or on a more casual day, head to the stables for a midday ride on her favorite horse.

David Cassady

David Cassady was not only a favorite for his singing voice, but for the fashionable looks he brought to our homes on The Partridge Family. This heart throb’s bright shirts and feathered hair made him an exemplary ’70s fashion icon.

Lynda Carter

When she wasn’t in her Wonder Woman costume or undercover, Lynda Carter’s outfits were very ’70s chic and included safari jackets and bell bottoms. Carter looked quite sophisticated!

Penny Marshall and Cindy Williams

These two average girls may have worn some very plain clothing at times, but they also had undeniable style. Penny Marshall’s cursive L and pencil skirts gave Laverne a classic look, while Cindy Williams’ fun collars and scarves always made Shirley stand out. These two had a down-to-earth elegance which was betrayed only by their constant penchant for mischief.

Clarence Williams

Mod Squad was arguably one of the hippest shows on TV at the time, and Clarence Williams had the coolest lines and clothes. Williams’ suave suits and well-groomed afro only added to his cooler-than-cool catch phrases.

Sonny and Cher

On their variety show, The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour, these two could change from Las Vegas rhinestones to patchwork plaid and everything in between in no time flat. Known for being on trend, they sported the fluffiest furs, longest fringe, and sparkliest sequins.
