The iconic Brady Bunch house was featured on the show A Very Brady Renovation on HGTV where each of the Brady kids helped to remodel the house in some way. In all it took almost a year for the changes to be completed and there were a lot of changes! The original house isn’t all that big and this surprises some people because there were so many people who were supposed to live there on the show. But, the illusion is because the interior shots of the house were done on a sound stage, while the exterior shots didn’t really reflect the house as it was back then. Now, however, the house is more like The Brady Bunch than ever before. Let’s a take look inside.
Those stairs, the stone horse, and the conversationally-arranged living room in ’70s colors make this interior immediately recognizable as the one that so many of us grew up with. The show was on for 5 years and is reruns for decades to follow, in part because the problems the family faced were so relatable. However, one could argue that the house was as much a character of the show as the kids or Alice or Mr. or Mrs. Brady.
With the bright color scheme, space age kitchen chairs, shag carpet, and stone accents the building is unlike anywhere else, although the elements inside may have been familiar. It’s a place that is unique to the show and to the era- you’d never see a home like this today. Well, not unless you go to the property itself!
The house has been fixed up inside with replicas of the original decor, including the art and the furniture that we knew and loved back then. They also made it bigger.
This Studio City, CA, house cost $61,000 in 1973. At the time it was a 3 bedroom 2 bath home. It was purchased for the show in 2018 for $3.5 million and then sold after renovations for $3.2 million as a 5 bedroom 5 bathroom house.
In all 2,000 square feet of space was added to original footprint of the building, though the additions were added to the back to keep the front looking exactly as it did in the opening shots of the show. The renovations also included creating Alice’s bedroom, not seen often, and a bathroom for her which was never a part of the show, but makes sense for a live-in housekeeper to have had.
If you ever wanted to see what the house looks like from a more realistic perspective, i.e. not the limited shots of the show, then this is your chance. In this tour you get to see the flow of the house and up-close views of the touches that made this home so welcoming and a part of our lives every week. The kids’ bedrooms have all the details, like awards and plaques, and even homework sitting out. The level of detail is really something to behold!
