Family names are the most special.
The royal family has been through quite a lot of ups and downs over the past 4 decades, with fanfare over the details of their lives increasingly scrutinized by the media. This phenomenon has reached several fever pitches over the years, including most recently when Oprah interviewed Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, in a tell-all TV special which revealed yet more problems within the family. Since their wedding day the couple has been known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, though they no longer go by the royal titles of “his/her royal highness” following their steps away from British royal life and their move the California. The pair have a new bundle of joy in the family as of June 4th, 2021.
In May of 2019 the couple welcomed their first child, a son they named Archie. Now, they have had a daughter who they’ve named Lilibet Diana. Lilibet was the of nickname the future Queen Elizabeth II, created when she couldn’t pronounce “Elizabeth” correctly. Her father, the future King George VI, then called her by this name throughout her childhood as a term of endearment.
Diana is the name of Prince Harry’s late mother, who died tragically in a car crash in Paris in 1997 while attempting to outrun the paparazzi.
The first and middle names the Duke and Duchess selected for their daughter are very personal and honor the women in Prince Harry’s family. A statement released by Buckingham Palace about the birth states that, “The Queen, the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have been informed and are delighted with the news.”
The newborn’s name is an extremely unique one which honors the queen and the family connection between the royals. But, there has been a lot of controversy around this choice of name and how much of a say the queen had in the decision. On the other hand many people find the tribute to be a touching one that shows respect for the women who raised Prince Harry.
Photos of Lilibet Diana have not been released to the public, but the Duke and Duchess issued a statement about their daughter, who has been nicknamed Lili, “She is more than we could have ever imagined, and we remain grateful for the love and prayers we’ve felt from across the globe.”
There are speculations that the naming of the newest royal was designed as a peace offering to the queen after a turbulent time. However, some in the UK have their doubts about whether the royals can work through the problems they’ve had in recent years.
