Those were the days. They were great bargaining chips during the lunch swap that often happened. The Little Debbie products have been pretty varied over the years, allowing room for all kinds of tastes.
But now Tom Blank of Weird History Food is taking an in-depth look at the history of the Little Debbie snacks, from their brand’s mascot to how it evolved.
As Tom explains, the company was founded by Oather “O.D.” McKee and his wife, Ruth. McKee started out by selling homemade cakes out of his car in Chattanooga, Tennessee during The Great Depression.
While it might have been O.D and Ruth who started the company, it was their granddaughter, Debbie, who became the face of the brand.
Over time, McKee Foods became more prominent, eventually turning into one of the most profitable snack food empires – and all with women at the forefront of the operation.
