Couple Renovating Basement Discovers Tin Box From 1950s In Ceiling— With Cash Inside.

Most of us have experienced that momentary high from finding a one, five, or, if we’re lucky, even twenty-dollar bill lying on the road. If you were a kid when this happened, you probably remember feeling like the richest person in the world.

One couple from Cleveland, Ohio, recently stumbled across their own monetary surprise. Theirs was just way bigger.

It all started in 2016 when the couple had just finished up renovating the first and second floors of their 1940s home. The husband, who later posted to Imgur under the name branik12, went to remodel the basement and noticed writing on the cinderblock wall after peeling off old sheets of drywall.

But he made the real discovery while opening up the ceiling. Wedged between a beam and a water pipe was a small tin box.

“I took the box outside and gathered the wife,” he wrote, curious about the contents. “It has something inside, but not heavy like coins or gold bars. Might get lucky though. Could be old sports cards?”

What he found waiting inside turned out to be so much better.

Wrapped in wax paper were three stacks of money, accompanied by a newspaper from 1951. The man jokingly added a tiny plastic banana to the pile “for scale.”

“Some of the bills were rarer than others,” the man noted. “Some brown notes, a gold certificate and some star notes nearly uncirculated. All bills were from 1928-1934.”

Accounting for the added value, the couple estimated they had a whopping $23,000 on their hands — but their good fortune didn’t end there.

About a week later, the man found a second tin box in the basement ceiling, noticing it felt much heavier than the first.

He waited for his wife to come home and the two opened the box to find it completely stuffed with even more bills!

They pulled out piles upon piles, absolutely giddy at that point. They had all the money appraised and learned they just hit the jackpot: they’d collected about $45,000!

The couple smartly decided to put all of it toward their mortgage, but are still wondering who hid the cash in the first place and why they never came back for it. That’s just a mystery we’ll all have to keep guessing at.
