5 Recipes For The Perfect 70s Dinner Party

There’s no doubt about it – food from the 70s was on a level all its own, for better or for worse. Jello molds reigned supreme, as did interesting ways to serve shrimp and other seafood. Go ahead and dive into a nostalgic dinner party straight from the 70s! Who knows, maybe you’ll get inspired to host a retro dinner party yourself.

Polynesian Shrimp


This fun ank funky, sweet and savory appetizer is a great way to start off your dinner party. First, hollow out a pineapple. Then mix 2 cups sour cream, 2 teaspoons curry powder, and 1 teaspoon salt. Pour the mixture into the pineapple and then create the kabobs with a pineapple chunk, shrimp, and an olive.

Tomato Aspic


Ah, yes, a 70s classic if ever there was one. A savory, tomato gelatin dish. In a sauce pan, combine 1 cup of water, an 8oz can of tomato paste, 2 bay leaves and 7 peppercorns, 1/2 a lemon, salt and pepper to taste, and a gelatin packet. Heat and stir until boiling, them pour into a jello mold of your choosing. Chill for 3 hours and garnish with cucumber slices and stuffed olives. Delish!

Seafood Mousse


This is such an… Intereesting way to serve seafood. Start by combining 8oz of cream cheese, 1 can of cream of celery soup, a gelatin packet (of course), 1 cup mayo, 4oz of shrimp, 4oz of crab meat, diced onion, diced celery, and 1 tablespoon lemon juice. Heat on the stove and then place in a jello mold. Chill for 3 hours and decorate. Enjoy the seafood mousse spread on some toast or a cracker!

Party Sandwich Loaf


Seeing this multi-layer sandwich reminds us of Shaggy from Scooby-Doo. Surely he would approve of this groovy snack! Slice an entire loaf of bread into four slices, once you’ve cut the crusts off. Spread the first layer on – shrimp salad. Next comes pineapple cream cheese, and finally, chicken bacon spread. Wrap the sandwich and chill in the fridge. Make the “frosting” with 2 cups cream cheese and 1 cup light cream. Add a few drops of green food coloring and stir to combine. Take the sandwich out and “frost,” then decorate with celery and carrot shapes. Top with light cream cheese around the edges!

Emerald Cantaloupe


End your meal with another classic – jello in a cantaloupe. Slice and empty out the cantaloupe. Pour green (or your favorite color) jello mix into the cantaloupe and add pineapple chunks. Chill for 3 hours and cut into slices!
