When you think of the South, you might think of sweet tea, lightnin’ bugs, and sitting on a front porch, but our guess is the first thing you think of is good ol’ stick-to-your-ribs comfort food. Whether it’s biscuits and gravy, a catfish po boy, or fried green tomatoes, Southern cooks do it like no one else. The South has a culinary style all its own: comforting, hearty, frequently fried… and always delicious. If you grew up in the South (or if you’re just hankerin’ for some down-home cooking), take a trip down memory lane with these 11 classic Southern recipes!

Southern Fried Chicken

Moist and crispy fried chicken is as Southern as it gets. And while our version might be a little different than Mama’s, we know your family will love it. It’s a twist on the traditional with a simple cornflake coating that gives it a crunch and flavor we can’t get enough of.

Old-Fashioned Tomato Pie

Southern Tomato Pie is a summertime essential. You may not have heard of it if you haven’t spent time in the South, and it’s about time that changed. The combination of creamy mayonnaise and juicy heirlooms is a match made in heaven. There’s good reason this classic has been around so long!

Classic Hush Puppies

Hush Puppies got their name because hunters and fisherman of long ago would toss these simple little fried balls of dough to dogs to “hush the puppies” during a fish fry or cookout. They turned out to be so irresistible that Southern cooks have been making their own versions for decades. (But we’re pretty partial to ours.) Serve ‘em alongside a fish fry, or all on their own, but give ‘em a try! They’re easy to make at home.
