“I Put a Spell on You”

“I Put a Spell on You,” Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ song that’s been covered by the likes of Nina Simone and Creedence Clearwater Revival and was selected as one of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll, sure has come a long way. It began as more of a shock rock ballad, as Hawkins described in Michael L. LaBlanc’s 1992 book “Contemporary Musicians: Profiles of the People in Music, Volume 8,”: “Before, I was just a normal blues singer. I was just Jay Hawkins. It all sort of just fell in place. I found out I could do more destroying a song and screaming it to death.” Well in 2016, Joe Maye put his spin on this classic tune, and the results speak for themselves. It doesn’t take the judges long to start hitting the “I Want You” buttons!

“Tiny Dancer”

The second Elton John cover featured on this list is probably one of our all-time favorites. Of course we’re talking about 1971’s “Tiny Dancer.” Covering Elton John is a challenging yet popular choice, because if you can perform one of his songs and do it justice — as Nolan Neal did in his 2016 audition — then you can really prove just how talented you are! This is probably our favorite performance from “The Voice,” and the judges agree; all four of them hit their buttons by the time Neal finishes!
