The Hookman

The boogeyman has long been used as the driving force behind scary stories and cautionary tales. Used to deter children from troublemaking, the boogeyman has taken on new forms in our modern times. Take for instance the story of the Hookman.

Supposedly, this nefarious figure waits for couples to park at the local Lover’s Lane before killing or mutilating his unsuspecting (and otherwise occupied) victims. In some versions a nervous couple finds a bloody hook on their door handle while in others the boy is killed and the frightened girl is led away by the police after locking herself in the car.

As a cautionary tale to deter high school kids from making out it might have some use, but otherwise has no basis in any factual events that we’ve ever heard of! Not surprisingly, this urban legend started popping up in the ’50s, right around the time that car culture and going steady were becoming incredibly popular.
