When The Country Went To War, These Starlets Did Their Part To Support The Effort!

There were so many ways that every government involved in World War II asked every citizen to help with the war effort. While you wouldn’t expect the stars in Hollywood to be planting gardens, they did help the war effort through fund-raising and promotion. Check out these starlets doing their part to help!

Lana Turner, Paulette Goddard, and Ilona Massey can be seen here promoting cotton legwear. The idea was to influence masses of American women to wear cotton instead of the increasingly valuable and rare silk and nylon stockings which were used in powder bags, parachutes, and for reuse by the military. Socks in “ribbed lisle, which have been designed for active sports wear” and stockings of “fine point lisle cotton mesh” were the order of the day for these starlets.

We hope you enjoyed seeing these Hollywood stars involved in the war effort. Besides these promotional shoots, they also raised money, endorsed war bonds, and went on tours in the U.S.O. to entertain those who worked the hardest: the troops. Though their contributions were far less dangerous, these stars were the face of many of the government’s campaigns. Through these efforts, tons of material was saved or re-used and every bit of the war effort helped us on to Victory.
