When it reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1963, it made Sakamoto the first Japanese recording artist to have a number one song on the chart.

1962: “Hey! Baby,” by Bruce Channel– A sincere question, some stellar harmonica riffs, and an upbeat tempo made “Hey! Baby,” by Bruce Channel a smash hit in 1962. Channel never went on to release anything as popular, but here’s a fun story from the production. The harmonica player Delbert McClinton actually met John Lennon while touring in the U.K. in 1962, and gave him harmonica lessons (which you can hear on songs like “Love Me Do,” and “Please Please Me.”
