1965: “Eve of Destruction,” by Barry McGuire– Much of the inspiration for the great music of this time came from the turbulence surrounding the decade. Several protests songs became quite popular, including McGuire’s 1965 rendition of “Eve of Destruction.” The song reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in September of 1965, giving McGuire his only song to chart on the billboards.

1964: “Ringo,” by Lorne Greene– Fans of the hit show “Bonanza,” will surely remember Lorne Greene, who played Ben Cartwright. You may also remember his ballad about Old West outlaw Johnny Ringo (not the Beatles’ drummer), which reached number one on the U.S. Billboard chart. The song — which may not be an entirely accurate portrayal —tells the story of a Western lawman and his relationship with Ringo, from a first-person account. Of course, Greene went on to experience more success in showbiz, but that was pretty much the pinnacle of his musical career.
