The Royal Family Hits Back Against “Racist, Sexist” attacks

The Royal Family took the rare step of publicly shaming the British press after a round of racist, sexist and false attacks were published against Prince Harry’s then-girlfriend Meghan Markle.

On Nov. 6, 2016, Prince Harry laced into British tabloid journalism, calling out the Sun and the Daily Mail by name while labelling their work as “racist” “defamatory” and “harassing” in nature.

Prince Harry’s defense of Markle was followed two days when an official statement was released from the Royal Family’s communications secretary addressing the “wave of abuse and harassment” directed toward Markle. The statement echoed Prince Harry’s charges of racism, defamation and harassment; while adding the charge of sexism to the pile. The Royal release was topped off by a specific rebuttal to an unspecified “smear on the front page of a national newspaper”, likely referring to the aforementioned false story published by The Sun, relabeling intimate scenes from Suits as supposed porn.

Throughout it all, Markle faced down the tabloid attacks with grace and class, never engaging in rebuttal or debate. Over the last year, she has won increasingly-positive coverage in the British media for both her charitable work and leadership in tackling poverty and gender-based inequity.
