Sesame Street Is Now a Real Place

Many of us have grown up watching Sesame Street either when we were kids or with our own children. The opening theme song inspired joy around the world, as do the friendly characters. The overall mood of the show has always been decidedly New York, which is why it’s so fitting that now there is a real place in New York City which is permanently named Sesame Street.

The Manhattan corner, at the intersection of Broadway and West 63rd St, has now been claimed for the American television show. The corner was previously given the name on a temporary basis for the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the program in 2009. Now, on the show’s 50th anniversary, the corner was renamed for good on May 1st, 2019. Elmo, the Count, Big Bird, and Cookie Monster were all there to take part in the ceremony, as were huge crowds of fans who never lost that childlike spirit.

Mayor Bill de Blasio in his opening speech claimed that: “This important occasion was brought to you by the number 50…50 years of helping children believe in themselves.” De Blasio also announced that May 1st would henceforth be known as Sesame Street Day.
