DIY Toilet Cleaning “Bombs”

It’s much easier than you might think.

If you’ve ever thought to yourself that cleaning the toilet requires entirely too many chemicals, then have we got a recipe for you. You can make your own toilet cleaning pods or “bombs” to tackle the job for you. Much like a bath bomb fizzes in the water so do these cleaning bombs. To make these cleaning tablets you probably have what this recipes calls for in your cabinets already.

To make this concoction you’ll need 1 cup of baking soda, 1/4 cup of citric acid (found in the canning aisle of the grocery), and 1 tablespoon of dishwashing liquid. For that last ingredient some say to always use Dawn soap, while others claim it doesn’t matter which brand you use. You’ll also need something to mold the bombs into, like a silicone ice cube tray or another small mold of some kind.

First combine the dry ingredients and then mix in the dish soap. Press mixture into molds and wipe away excess as mixture expands. Then top up the molds with more of the cleaning mix if there are any divots. Let dry for at least 4 hours before removing from the molds and then store in an airtight container.

These bombs react with water, so you’ll want to keep them completely dry until you’re ready to use them. When the toilet is looking less than sparkling, drop one of these bombs in and let it fizz up for a while before giving the bowl a quick swizzle with a toilet cleaning brush. Then flush and and reveal a much cleaner toilet bowl with minimal effort. You’ll still have to do deep cleanings here and there, but this method can keep some of the discoloration and scum at bay without having to spend a lot of time scouring. Other advantages these tablets have are fewer chemicals and a non-liquid formula that’s impossible to accidentally spill.

This recipe comes from Jessica at Mom 4 Real, who says she also uses these same bombs as dishwasher tablets. See how to make these toilet cleaning bombs step-by-step in the video below.
