Christopher Reeve’s Superman Cape Is Up For Auction

The cape going to auction appeared in 1978’s Superman: The Movie, 1980’s Superman II, and possibly 1983’s Superman III.

Superman film memorabilia is abundant, and perhaps you know someone who is a collector. They may own a few trinkets that showed up in the movies, but there is a new item offered by Julian’s Auctions that just may be worth considering. It is the Superman cape worn by Christopher Reeves in some of the Superman movies. You can have it, but you may need to pay up to $40,000 at auction for it.

The cape going to auction appeared in 1978’s Superman: The Movie, 1980’s Superman II, and possibly 1983’s Superman III. Julian’s Auctions says that Reeves was mounted on a wire harness while he wore the cape to work with front projection and blue screen. It was what made him appear as if he was flying. You can see small cuts in the fabric that allow the wires to pass through. Pockets at the bottom of the cape also allowed for the insertion of rods to make it seem as if it was flapping in the air.

Bids are currently being taken by the auction that runs through July 17. It is estimated by Julian’s Auctions that the cape may sell for anywhere from $20,000 up to $40,000. A spacesuit is also being offered from the movie, “A Space Odyssey” that may fetch up to $300,000. One of the Pontiac Firebird Trans Am’s used in the Night Rider television show is also on sale and may get up to $200,000 at auction.
