3) As a Lubricant for Metal

If a hinge was squeaky or something metal needed to be lubricated, lard was the choice for many reasons. It was readily available and worked well. Lard oil (mixed with kerosene) was used for decades as a cutting fluid for machinists, keeping their stock cool while they worked and some folks still use this mixture today, though it’s on the decline.
