When you actually look at the list of hit songs she penned, it’s really quite amazing.

8. “One Fine Day,” by The Chiffons

In the summer of 1963, “One Fine Day,” by The Chiffons became quite the hit, reaching the top five on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. King must have especially liked the song, as she recorded her own version in 1980 (which reached number 12 on the Hot 100).

9. “Pleasant Valley Sunday,” by The Monkees

In 1967, King and Goffin lived on a street named Pleasant Valley Way, in West Orange, New Jersey. It was that street that inspired them to write The Monkee’s 1967 hit, “Pleasant Valley Sunday.” The song peaked at #3 on the Hot 100, was featured on the second season of their Television show, and is widely accepted to be one of their greatest hits.

“(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” by Aretha Franklin

Yes, in 1967 King and Goffin wrote what would become a standard song for The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin. Reaching number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 that year, “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” was also recorded by by King herself, Mary J. Blige, and Celine Dion amongst others. It was the last big hit Goffin and King would write together. See a special performance of the song below featuring an introduction by Chilina Kennedy, who plays Carole King in Beautiful, the Carole King musical.
