Art Deco as a movement is sleek at its core, with chrome and wood playing big roles in various designs. You will often find a piece here or there from the 1920s to 1940s that embodies this style, but it’s rare to see a whole room decorated in Art Deco style today. So for fun we’re looking at 10 Art Deco rooms that we’d love to live in- even if it’s just a dream.

This living room was a display in a department store in 1928 celebrating French modern design. The items speak to a quiet elegance, while the fun shapes on the rug show that not everything is meant to be serious.

From the “American” section of the same exhibition comes this futuristic dining room. It would be easier to imagine this table and decor in a 1980s dining space rather than a 1920s one. The sleek furniture in what looks like lacquered silver is unlike most furniture of the era, giving a space-age look to a room the was decades ahead of its time.

The style of Art Deco wasn’t only in the furnishings. The details built into the architecture also brought Art Deco into a space. A common feature of the day was to create angular fireplaces as the feature of a room, making every piece in the room a bit more Art Deco simply by association.

This Art Deco fireplace features a smooth surround with a stylized carving above the mantle. A floor lamp continues the Streamline theme, but the more Mid-century Modern couch and side table show how rooms that were designed at height of Art Deco were styled later on. It all works together!

Likewise doorways could also be given the Art Deco treatment, such as this stepped design above. Similar line-based designs could be inset as panels on the walls or incorporated into tile work.

Some rooms were Deco because the owners splashed out on a host of accoutrements that gave the room that air of 1920s glamour. This lounge area in a home from the 1940s shows plenty of metal, glass, and wood. The columns, curved bar, and mural give this space an imposing Art Deco theme. A glass block wall divides the space, a design choice that was quite popular at the time.

Bedrooms in the Art Deco style often embraced curved mirrors or artwork combined with more angular pieces of furniture.

This bedroom features mostly right angles, which are contrasted with the curved chaise longue and club chair.

One of the more accessible Art Deco styles was made in Waterfall furniture. The stylized handles, mix of curves and straight lines, a marquetry-like veneers were a nod to the more expensive and elaborate designs from the 1920s- rendered in affordable materials. This bedroom has a nostalgic air that’s both well-designed and welcoming.

We saved the best for last. It’s not often that you see color images of Art Deco rooms from the 1920s, but they do exist here and there. This tinted photograph gives a sense of what the colors used during the period were. Jade green, brown, lavender, black, and grey used together create a surprisingly harmonious look. Notice the busy pattern on the rug- a common feature in Art Deco rooms that offsets the sleekness of the other aspects.
