The Vanishing Hitchhiker

This myth is a very spooky one. The legend goes that a driver picks up a hitchhiker only to find part way through the journey that passenger has disappeared from the moving vehicle. The driver finds out later, either through stopping and asking a local or through explaining the scene to another person, that the hitchhiker died X number of years ago in the exact spot where they vanished from the car. This story is usually placed as having happened at night.

The supernatural element of this story makes it an enticing one to believe and there are many variations on the gender, age, and circumstance of the hitchhiker. This urban legend is said to actually originate in the Bible with the story of Philip the Apostle who is driving an Ethiopian chariot at the time that a spirit comes to baptize him and then vanishes.
