Signs were an expression of the struggle to make ends meet, to keep your dignity during hard times, and to make sense of what was happening. Signs warning thieves or using financial metaphors were common.

The unique circumstances of the ’30s put many regular folks in dire straits. Floods, drought, lack of work, and slow government response made for some very strong reactions from otherwise mild-mannered folks. It’s clear from the signs of the era just how many people were struggling.
