What a great story! Harold Arlen and “Yip” Harburg wrote “Over The Rainbow” back in 1938 for Judy Garland to sing in “The Wizard of Oz”. What seems a fairly straight-forward song is actually quite a bit more complex. Watch as composer Rob Kapilow explains some of the intricacies of the song. It will give you a whole new appreciation for this magical song!

“Words make you think thoughts, music makes you feel a feeling, but a song makes you feel a thought.”

–Yip Harburg

“Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high.

There’s a land that I’ve heard of once in a lullaby.

Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue.

And the dreams that you dare to dream,

really do come true.

Someday I’ll wish upon a star

and wake up where the clouds are far behind me.

Where troubles melt like lemon drops,

high above the chimney tops,

that’s where you’ll find me.

Somewhere over the rainbow, blue birds fly.

Birds fly over the rainbow

why then, oh why can’t I?

If happy little bluebirds fly beyond the rainbow

why, oh why can’t I?”
