1) Tupperware

Almost as revolutionary to the way we cook as the refrigerator, these little plastic storage containers changed how we imagined food storage. They also gave us a new way to buy these items. The idea of a party where you get your kitchen supplies is a bit far fetched in some ways. But, many women did attend these parties and they came to rely on Tupperware in the home. Like Avon and Mary Kay, Tupperware offered women a way to get ahead without competing with men on a daily basis. How many companies had a female vice president in 1951? Tupperware did, and after the party concept boosted sales by an enormous amount, Brownie Wise was made VP.

And they were not so cheap back then. These new items were innovative and harder to reproduce. But, for those who could afford them, they made a world of difference for moms in the kitchen, especially moms who worked and needed to make food ahead. The “burp” or “whisper” for freshness really sealed the deal (so to speak) for many women. The variety of colors and sizes the company would eventually come to produce have matched with every major decorating trend ever since.
