Largest Frida Kahlo Exhibit In The Past 40 Years Is Coming To Chicago Next Year

26 original works by Kahlo along with historical exhibits will be included in Frida Kahlo 2020.

Cleve Carney Museum of Art and the McAninch Arts Center are partnering up with the College of DuPage next summer to host a new exhibition of the works of Frida Kahlo, the Mexican artist. 26 original works by Kahlo will be included in the exhibit. They are on loan from the Museum Delores Olmedo in Mexican city. This will be the largest event of the works of Frida Kahlo in over four decades in Chicago.

A number of major events from Kahlo’s career will be covered, including her accident and injury as well as her romance with Diego Rivera. It will come together in Frida Kahlo 2020, with a selection of oil paintings and drawings by the artist. It will include her autobiographical paintings that carry the themes of Mexican politics, culture, love, and death. Along with her collection of art, historical exhibits will also be included to add some context. Those include some of Kahlo’s clothing, a timeline of her life and a video presentation. A ‘poetry garden’ has also been designed by the Boll Horticultural Company.

“This unique collection of works is deeply tied to Kahlo’s personal narrative. it covers an arc of her life and career,” says Justin Witte, Cleve Carney Museum of Art Director and exhibition curator. “It’s a full arc tied into her person and covers her accident, which is when she started to create self-portraits.”

A celebratory event inspired by Kahlo’s work is also leading up to the grand opening of the event. The McAninch Arts Center will be sharing Mexican culture through dance when they host the Ballet Folclórico de Mexico. They will also be presenting A New Philharmonic, A Salute to Frida on April 18 and 19th to perform some of the music of her heritage.

June 2020 is the target date when Frida Kahlo 2020 opens at Cleve Carney Museum of Art. You can currently purchase untimed entry tickets for $35 or timed entry tickets for $18 in person.
