The Invention Of The Football Helmet Included Some Unbelievable Safety Demonstrations!

Since its inception in the 1800’s, many rules and regulations have been put in to place in an effort to make football safer. Arguably, nothing has been more impactful on the game than the introduction of the helmet. And while the supposed safety of modern-day helmets is continually being brought into question, there was a time when players didn’t wear any head protection at all! While the use of helmets began with what was essentially little more than a leather hat, one inventor in the 1930s developed a more durable version. In the following clip from 1932, the inventor goes on to demonstrate the safety of his helmet through a number of cringe-worthy tests. Given what we now know about the effects of concussions and head trauma, it’s quite shocking to watch these demonstrations; see for yourself!
