The Most Exclusive Vintage Clothing Store in NYC

This place is like a museum of fashion history.

Names like Dior, Givenchy, and Chanel today conjure up images of extreme luxury and only the highest quality of clothing. But, you usually wouldn’t expect to find these labels at a vintage store- that is unless that vintage store only catered to a select clientele.

At New York Vintage in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City, the first floor of the retail space is populated with vintage clothing that the public can browse through and purchase. However, the exclusive second floor is filled with designer clothing and rarities like couture gowns. These include pieces from important (but now defunct) fashion houses like Worth, Adrian, and Schiaparelli. This private space is only open by appointment.

Owner, Shannon Hoey, calls these pieces “museum caliber” and “impossible to come by.” For this reason the upstairs is an area where clothing and accessories can be rented out, but not purchased outright. Hooey says that her best upstairs clients are fashion stylists and editors, as well as A-list celebrities who want a certain look for an event, like when Lady Gaga rented a rhinestone bra that once belonged to Josephine Baker.
