When two people are genuinely making each other laugh there is sort of contagious humor that is layered on top of any planned jokes. Carol Burnett, the queen of skit comedy, was quite good at this despite the fact that she tried to never “break” on camera, especially on her TV show, The Carol Burnett Show. Burnett and the cast certainly didn’t always succeed at that task, but that’s what makes the show so much fun to watch.

When Burnett appeared together with Dolly Parton for the 1979 TV special, Dolly and Carol in Nashville, the two were very clearly cracking each other up on stage. This joyful performance features the song, “No One Picks Like a Nashville Picker Picks” which is a mouthful that only a seasoned performer could deliver with ease.

What’s really sweet is to hear Burnett describing how Parton cobbled together a broken mandolin and some guitar strings to make her own homemade instrument at the tender age of 6. But, the performance really gets going once the crowd joins in for some audience participation.
