Machines like the one pictured above were the first of their kind. These gleaming examples of craftsmanship in brass were originally invented to help the deaf. The curved keyboard, rounded paper guides, and hand-engraved letters make this early example more like a prop from a futuristic sci-fi drama than piece of our history. An 1867 Malling-Hansen writing-ball sold for $123,125! We hear there’s another one (of the less than 200 of this design ever made) coming up for auction with a lower estimated price!
