1960s

Androgynous looks were fashionable at the start of the ’60s. Young ladies embraced short hair and simple lines, while the young fellas let their hair grow into a shag look. At the same time bouffant hairstyles were also making waves with ladies. Pixie cuts like those on Twiggy and Goldie Hawn sparked a trend for very short hair.

Thick-framed glasses were in for both men and women. Men’s suits got super skinny, as did their ties, in what became an iconic male silhouette of the decade influenced by young stars like the Beatles. By the end of the ’60s, however, men’s clothing had taken on a decidedly less compact look, with bohemian styles and bell bottoms taking over.

1970s

The decade was all over the place in terms of style. Long, straight hair parted down the middle was popular for ladies for much of the decade (à la Cher and Marcia Brady), giving rise to a more natural look. Towards the end of the ’70s feathered and styled hair became more common, as did lip gloss and frosty eyeshadow colors.

The “anything goes” attitudes towards fashion meant that a range of styles were popular in ’70s. For men the shag haircuts of the ’60s paved the way for all manner of long hairstyles in the following decade. Both men and women were donning more casual wear and denim than ever before.
