3) Mascara

Now mascara comes in tubes, but around World War I when it was first marketed to average women this product came in a compact with an applicator akin to a tiny toothbrush to apply it. The dry black or brown makeup cake was often moistened with saliva to make a paste, a practice that earned it the unofficial nickname of “spit cake.”
