Since the first days of makeup there has always been a debate on what is “too much” and about what is tasteful. Even though wealthy women had been using makeup in the Elizabethan era, there remained a doubt at the wholesomeness of changing one’s appearance in any kind of deceptive way. Queen Victoria found the concept of makeup deceitful and impolite, an opinion which greatly influenced women of the era to remain barefaced and rely on their natural beauty.

During the era of World War I even a simple tube of lipstick was considered too risqué for respectable women, let alone some of the makeup looks we have today. Flash forward to the modern era and the beauty products being outlawed are now experimental plastic surgeries. Oh how the times have changed!
