10 Fantastic Variety Shows We Wish Were Still On TV. #8 Was My Mom’s Favorite!
They were some of the best shows on television and always made us laugh!
7) The Johnny Carson Show
This show wasn’t on all that long, but marked Johnny Carson’s first entry into TV show hosting. A scant few episodes remain, due to the nature of kinescopes and the short episode run. The precursor characters to those that would appear on The Tonight Show, like his mind-reader Carnac, are just some of the great skits on this comedy show. We miss Johnny Carson so much!
6) The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour
With the over-the-top costumes, bright lights, and corny jokes, Sonny and Cher’s show was a world all its own! “The Vamp” was one of the best skits, but every song that Sonny and Cher would perform was a treat! Between the halter tops and the glittering gowns, the fashion on this show was unmatched! The show where Terri Garr played countless characters and Burt Reynolds played an opinionated gun-slinger, The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour was one of our favorites! Have a look at this golden clip featuring Farrah Fawcet.
5) The Judy Garland Show
With stellar performances by the one and only Judy Garland each show, this variety show was exceptional in the elegant and tasteful performances it offered. The Judy Garland Show was an hour in which to find real distinction and classic songs. Often a celebration of Broadway and Hollywood combined, this was the musicians’ show for sure. Here is an absolutely wonderful clip of Barbara Streisand and Judy herself singing “Happy Days Are Here Again.”
