This story almost seems too sensational to believe. Two years ago, an apartment in Paris was discovered after the woman who owned the flat, Mrs. De Florian, passed away at the age of 91. The apartment had allegedly sat untouched for more than 70 years, in the 9th arrondissement of Paris— a relatively popular and vibrant part of the city. Mrs. De Florian had fled Paris during WWII, and simply never returned. They found many incredible items inside, but one in particular (and its story)is the most memorable.

Amongst the treasure trove of late 19th century items was a painting: one that was identified as the work of the 19th century Italian artist Giovanni Boldini, featuring a beautiful Frenchwoman in a pink evening dress. After a bit of research, the Frenchwoman was identified as Mrs de Florian’s grandmother, Marthe de Florian, a French actress and socialite.

Also found in the apartment was a collection of love letters addressed to Marthe de Florian, including one from the 72nd Prime Minister of France, George Clemenceau, as well as one from Boldini himself! After confirming that the painting was an authentic Boldini (completed in 1894 when de Florian was 24), it went on to sell for $3.4 million.
