In 1890 Clemens’ bad investments, including a typesetting machine that was quickly outmoded by other printing methods, caught up with him. In 1891 he moved with his family to Europe before setting out on a speaking tour, the latter of which enabled him to pay off his debts. But, the family would never again live at the Hartford house after Clemens’ financial problems.
