Several illustrious auctions have been held since Stern’s death in 2013 to sell originals, copies, and contact sheets of these photos (the book about the sitting was first published by Stern in 1982).

Monroe loved Vera scarves, and can be seen draping herself with one in photos from the Last Sitting.

2) An Homage

Lindsay Lohan famously did a photoshoot with Bert Stern in which the two replicated poses and shots from the Last Sitting in 2008. It’s a nice homage, but we think there will never be anything like the original Marilyn Monroe photos.

For years some of the photos were believed to have been stolen from Stern, for which he sued. The photos in question were lent to the magazine Eros, during the ’60s but were never returned to Stern. The case was settled after the two photographers being sued by Stern, who had the photos in their possession, revealed that they had actually found the photos in a trash can!
