Deep in the Mediterranean Sea, just off the coast of Egypt, archeologist Frank Goddio discovered something truly amazing: the ruins of the lost city of Thonis-Heracleion. And while it might not be the most famous sunken city, it’s definitely an incredible discovery.

Thonis-Heracleion (a combination of the Greek and Egyptian names of the city) was a bustling port city that’s shrouded in mystery. When and why it sank is still up for debate (although we believe it’s been at the bottom of the sea for at least 1,200 years, and prominent theories suggest that it sank due to the weight of the buildings and a crumbling, water-logged clay-and-sand soil foundation).

While the city was initially found in 2000, some extraordinary discoveries have been made during the 13-year excavation, with wonderfully-preserved artifacts that are giving us an idea of what this bustling port-city was like. You can see the full documentary on the lost city in the video below, but skip ahead to the 15 minute mark to see the actual discovery.
