9 Classic Songs Written By Carole King… Number 4 Is An All-Time Favorite!

When you actually look at the list of hit songs she penned, it’s really quite amazing.

4. “The Loco-Motion,” by Little Eva

This endearing song has appeared in the American Top 5 three times, but no rendition is more famous than Little Eva’s 1962 hit (the other two versions were by Grand Funk Railroad in 1974 and Kylie Minogue in 1988). Originally written for Dee Dee Sharp (who turned it down), the song is one of two to reach number one on the charts by different recording artists (more on that later).

5. “Go Away Little Girl,” by Steve Lawrence

As we mentioned above, “The Loco-Motion,” was one of only two songs to reach number one on the charts by two separate artists. The second song to do that was also written by King and Goffin. “Go Away Little Girl,” was recorded by Steve Lawrence in 1962, and again by Donny Osmond in 1971 (The Happenings also recorded a version in 1966, which reached number 12).

6. “Up On The Roof,” by The Drifters

Recorded in 1962 and released in 1963, “Up On The Roof,” reached number 5 on the U.S. pop singles chart for The Drifters. In 1980, Rolling Stone described the song as an “every way remarkable pop song for 1962,” and the song was named number 114 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list.
