While many stars in the 1980s were content with conservative looks, some were pushing the boundaries of fashion with their couture dresses. Towards the end of the decade, the red carpet looks picked up increasing media attention, something which had been limited in decades past.

1980s

At the 1980 Academy Awards, Meryl Streep won for Best Supporting Actress and her gown was white with a very modern white jacket to go with it! We also love announcer Cloris Leachman’s dress with a funky grass and flower design. Have a look in the video below.

In 1987, Molly Ringwald presented the award for Film Editing dressed in a timeless black beaded gown.

Gena Davis won Best Supporting Actress for The Accidental Tourist in 1989 wearing a pale blue satin dress reminiscent of Grace Kelly’s gown from 1956. A year later she would win again for Thelma & Louise.
