7) Panama Hats Are Actually Made in Ecuador
As early as the 19th century the Ecuadorian woven hats were being known as Panama Hats, particularly after they were showcased at the 1855 World’s Fair in Paris. This misnomer comes from the fact that the hats would pass through Panama before being shipped all over the world and unfortunately, the misleading name stick.
7) The Black Box is Actually Orange
Black boxes on commercial airplanes (aka flight recorders) are actually orange. They used to be black and the name stuck around. But, another theory is that the first incarnation of this invention worked like a dark room, recording a code on film, which required total blackness inside the box, hence the name black box. It is catchier than orange box you have to admit. In 1967 all commercial aircraft in the U.S. was required to have a flight recorder aboard.
9) Electric Eels Are Fish
Part of the group of flatfish, electric eels got their name from their snakelike appearance. And hey, get this- they actually breathe air!
