This 1965 Classic Is Still a Runaway Hit With Us!

This song always takes us back to simpler times.

In 1961 the price of a gallon of gas 27 cents, John F. Kennedy was sworn in as President of the United States, and Breakfast at Tiffany’s made its debut on the big screen to great praise. There was also a song released that year on Big Top records that captivated the nation – Del Shannon’s “Runaway.”

Charles Westover, as he was known before he took the stage name of Del Shannon, specialized in country music, but after being signed to a larger record company, his sound became closer to rock and roll. The song “Runaway” was a song Shannon had performed in Michigan with the band Charlie Johnson and the Big Little Show Band. When this song was released in 1961 it climbed all the way to #3 on the Billboard charts. Have a listen to this wonderful tune below.
